An Overview
The trek to Chandrashila peak at 4,130 m is an awakening trek in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. The best time for this trek is in the months of April to November. Ukhimath is the nearest town from the base camp and Sari village is where this trek begins from. While the total length of this trek is 26 km one way, his trek is known to be one the easiest and most rewarding treks out there, offering a 360° view of the Greater Himalayas, including mountains like Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Peak, Bandarpunch and Chaukhamba peaks. The trek to Chandrashila goes through the mesmerising meadow of Rohinin Bugyal. Rohini Bugyal is filled with the fragrance of mixed forests which include oak trees and pine as well as the lush green and snowy surroundings. It is a complete escape from the busy world. Chandrashila is the summit of Tungnath temple, the highest Shiva temple in the world and is the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples and is located at an altitude of 3680 meters above sea level.
Deoria Tal is a beautiful lake located about 2.5 km from Sari village. It is situated at an altitude of about 2,438 meters. The path is a lush green expanse which is surrounded by snow-covered mountains in the background. It is like a fairytale lake where one can occasionally find animals and birds drinking water from this sparkling blue lake. It is renowned for its camping site and is a bird watcher's paradise. The water of the lake is pristine in its beauty and is most famous for reflection of the surrounding snow-covered peaks of Chaukhamba & Kedarnath groups of peaks especially at dawn & dusk which enhances its beauty.

Quick Facts About Chandrashila Peak
- Chandrashila Peak literally means "Moon Rock". According to one of the popular legend, this is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon-king Ravana. Another legend says that moon-god Chandra spent time here in penance.
- Tungnath is the highest Shiva Shrine among the Panch Kedar temples. The arm of Lord Shiva came out at this place as per Kedarnath myth.
- As per mythology, Deoria Tal is the same lake where Pandavas were asked queries by Yaksha.
Chandrashila Peak Trek Itinerary Via Rohini Bugyal
This adventurous trip begins with our arrival in Haridwar, followed by a drive to Saari village, Ukhimath which will take approximately 7-8 hours. Upon reaching Saari, we begin trekking towards Deoria Tal. Here, we get a briefing about the peaks visible including Chaukhamba Massif, followed by a bonfire and night stay in camps by the lake.
We begin this day with a breakfast at Deoria Tal and then resume trekking to Rohini Bugyal. The trail to Rohini Bugyal is filled with the fragrance of mixed forests which include oak trees and pine as well in the lush green & snowy surroundings. If you are among the lucky few, one can spot the beautiful local bird “Monal”. Some trekkers have also seen the spotted deer in the vicinity. As one enjoys the beautiful view of the path strewn with beautiful flowers, gardens, the heart yearns to sing along with the countryside birds as they chirp & sing. After exploring this beautiful region, we end the day with a bonfire and dinner followed by caming at Rohini Bugyal.
This day we continue trekking further to reach Chopta. As we walk up and down through the trail, we will witness different varieties of forests like Oaks, Maple, Rhododendrons, etc. Oak and Maple give a brilliant orange hue to the forests in autumn while the Rhododendron trees bear saturated red and pink flowers during spring. Once at Chopta, we can unwind and take rest and get re-energized with a cup of tea and snacks, followed by dinner and night stay in camps at Chopta.
After having morning breakfast we will now head towards the ancient Tungnath Temple at an altitude of 3680 m. After soaking in the immense peace and tranquility of this place, we will then continue to Chandrashila top, which is at an altitude of 4130 m. One can enjoy the most naturally breathtaking & beautiful vistas of the Kedar, Chaukhamba, Bandarpoonch and other peaks in the vicinity. Green slopes cover both sides of the peak. You can have a refreshing tea break while resting on the bulky stone shaped dining tables along the return path to Chopta. Back at Chopta base camp, we get to relax as trekking finally comes to an end. The night ends with a bonfire and night stay in Chopta in camps.
The last day of the itinerary consists of having a heavy breakfast and tea, vefore starting the drive back to Haridwar for your return journey with a heart full of happy memories.
