An Overview
Indrahar Pass located at 4,342 m is an exquisite trek in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Trekatribe offers trekking to this enchanting pass in the months of April-October. To reach Indrahar Pass, one must first reach the Triund ridge. Triund (2,975 meters)- an extremely popular trekking spot- is the crown jewel of Dharamshala, situated in the laps of Dhauladhar mountains, it has the perfect view of the Dhauladhar mountains on one side and Kangra valley on the other. This trek attracts a lot of tourists every year from India and all over the world. Triund is 18 km from Dharamshala and and the trail to the top starts some 7 km away, at Dharamkot and passes through the Galu Devi temple. From this temple, it takes around 3 hours to reach Triund. The last one kilometre is popularly known as the “22 curves” as it has 22 tiring curves before you finally reach Triund.
There are many options to reach Galu. Either you can hire a taxi from Mcleodganj till Galu or you can start the trek right from Mcleodganj. Bhagsu Nag is another point to start the trek. From Galu, there is an unambiguous byway which goes through a beautiful forest of oak, deodar, and rhododendron. Furthermore, this entire stretch is perfect for birdwatchers, as the forests here are literally swarming with various kinds of songbirds. The best time for trekking is from March until May in the first part of the year and September till December in the second half of the year. Though it is rainy in June and July, trekking is still possible, and the meadow is lush green, presenting an out of this world vista.
Indrahar Pass Trek Analysis
Indrahar Pass is a high altitude Pass and is at a height of 4375 meters above sea level. From Triund, the trail to Indrahar Pass passes through snowline cafe, Ilaqa Jot, and Lahesh caves. We might find some local shepherds (Gaddis) on the way, especially near Ilaqa Jot. It takes 4 hours to reach Indrahar Pass from Lahesh Caves, it involves a steep climb and is quite challenging. Indrahar Pass rewards with a beautiful view of the Pir Panjal Range in the North and the Manimahesh Kailash Peak (5656 m) in the East direction. Indrahar Pass Trek Itinerary
Day 1
Hop on to the evening luxury AC Volvo bus from Delhi, and give yourself a good sleep in the comfortable ride to the hills, as you prepare yourself for one of the best adventures of your life ahead!
Day 2
After reaching McLeod Ganj early in the morning, we start for the trek to our first point- Triund. The starting point is McLeod Ganj, which is the home of Dalai Lama, and from there we begin our uphill journey (9 km). The entire trek uphill will take about 4-5 hours. The climb is very easy with a few steep ascents here and there, with magnificent views giving you company throughout! After reaching Triund top, we pitch our tents and get ready for some piping hot dinner to warm us against the strong evening winds at the ridge. Go to your camp bed with a happy tummy, and a happier heart, surrounded by such picturesque vistas, ready to take on the challenges of the next day.
Day 3
The trek to our second point- Lahesh Cahves is easy and leisurelyand should take about 5 hours from Triund. Lahesh cave is at 3550 m, a natural rock cave shelter. We trek little further from Lahesh cave to Chhatta Parao which is the bottom of Indrahar Pass, passing through the soft snow and icy streams! Overnight stay at a camp or the cave depending upon the weather situation.
Day 4
We start our hike to Indrahar Pass (4,350 m) early morning after breakfast. The trek should take about 2-3 hours. Indrahar Pass is a passway to Chamba valley en route Bharmour and Kwarsi. Once at the pass, we stop for 30 minutes to rest and listen to the sound of silence and connect with ourself. This is followed by a briefing about Manimahesh Kailash Peak, visible from the pass, and about the peaks and ranges of Chamba and the Pir Panjal range visible. We then descend back to Triund (5 hours), followed by dinner and night stay in tents.
Day 5
We wake up early morning to catch one of the best sunrises you will ever see, with the sun rays spilling over the snow-clad Dhauladhar Mountains. After breakfast, we begin our descent which will be much easier and faster than the climb up. Upon reaching McLeod Ganj, you are free to explore the city and its bustling markets selling beautiful trinkets like healing crystal jewellery, colourful yak wool apparels and much more!
